There are a number of considerations for you to think about when choosing a digital marketing agency.

Look for one that is right sized for you and for your needs. If you are a start-up, you want an agency that works with start-ups. This will exclude a lot of the large, established agencies out of the consideration set and will focus on digital marketing agencies that are specialized in small businesses.

Look for one that is growing. You want an agency that can grow with you and your business.

Look at their areas of expertise. When your start-up is maturing, what type of advertising/marketing do you envision your company doing? Depending on what industry you are in, you may be doing a lot of print, or a lot of trade shows/events, or require TV commercials (in addition to digital). What types of media does the agency specialize in and does it align with your vision of where you will need to be advertising?



Look at where they are located/have offices. Is it important to you that they are local? When building and executing against a vision, it is important to me to sit in the same room and be able to communicate the nuances of my business and my target audience.

What is important to you? Does the agency enable you to work with/have access to what is important to you and your business? For example, I appreciate great design. It is important to me to be able to work with great designers as I build the brand. If SEO is most important to you, look for an agency that specializes in SEO.

Consider current/past clients and their work. There are efficiencies to be gained when working with an agency that has worked with brands in your industry.

Launching a start-up means you are hungry. Look for an agency that matches your hunger. By definition, you are building the plane while you are flying it. Look for a co-pilot that demonstrates the desire to help you fly the plane.
